News from England and Senegal: Bukayo Saka prepares for World Cup Round of 16 kick-off

Sky Sports News has learned that Bukayo Saka is set to start for England against Senegal in Sunday’s World Cup Round of 16.

Saka scored twice in the opening game of the FIFA World Cup, which England won 6-2 against Iran, but missed the net against the United States in the following match.

The 21-year-old Arsenal winger was an unused substitute in the 3-0 win over Wales with Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford favoring the scorers.

But Saka will now return to the starting line-up against Senegal on Sunday as Gareth Southgate’s side seek to reach a third consecutive quarter-final of a major tournament.

The reason for the defensive mentality?

Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett brings the latest England squad news which suggests Bukayo Saka is set to start in England’s World Cup Round of 16 against Senegal.

Sky Sports News correspondent Rob Dorsett

“There’s no doubt that Saka has been in great form with Arsenal this season. Saka took the lead against Iran and was man of the match. Probably what he got today.” .

Southgate know they can count on Saka to return should they be interrupted, and they have the pace and the energy to make sure that happens as it will be a Senegalese team sport.

However, that’s a huge call.

What does the inclusion of Saka’s attack mean for the list?

Melissa Reddy, Sky Sports News Senior Correspondent:

“Despite all talk of an unchanged roster, Saka is close to starting, so you can expect a Phil Foden or Marcus Rashford to be missing.

The fact that Saka rested before the last game probably means it was always planned.

There remains a point of contention as to what Southgate would have done elsewhere in the attack. Foden and Rashford offer something else – Rashford is direct but Foden’s agility and drive on the ball was on display against Wales. But I don’t think there are many complaints about Saki’s inclusion.

“Raheem Sterling is also someone Southgate believes in and Southgate didn’t start a knockout game without him; the combination of Sterling and Kane was one of the pillars of his management.”

Sky Sports News correspondent Rob Dorsett said:

There is no doubt that most of the side will remain the same. As expected, the 4-3-3 formation has worked well for England so far in the tournament, allowing them to have an extra player in midfield, so I expect that to remain consistent.

The four defenders will likely be the same, although it’s a throw-in between Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier from the right. Walker can win this battle – his exceptional pace is a trait Southgate have always valued, although without Trippier in the squad England are losing some of their set-piece experience.

Declan Rice and Judd Bellingham are solid options in midfield, while Jordan Henderson could bow out to Mason Mount due to his extra experience and solid presence.

England manager Gareth Southgate believes the team selection dilemma is a good position and the team believe he can develop.

We know Harry Kane will be leading the line for England, even though he is yet to score in this World Cup. The captain isn’t playing at full capacity but in the pre-match press conference he assured that he was in top form and feeling good.

His commitment is still very valuable: three assists, more than any Englishman in the World Cup since David Beckham more than two decades ago.

Thus, the biggest bones of contention surround England’s wide attacking positions, which have been the subject of much debate since the win over Wales. In fact, long before this game.

England captain Harry Kane says he feels good as he prepares for the last 16 against Senegal.

Expect Jack Grealish to remain England’s super bowler, so the question is which of four, with possible convincing arguments for Rashford, Foden, Sterling and Saka.

Saka is expected to start, while Southgate said in their pre-match press conference that they were “not sure there is a right or wrong choice” as all four are unique and each offers something something different. It’s very real.

He also pointed out – rightly – that with five substitutes available, each had the potential to make an impact from the bench.

There is crazy media speculation that Henderson, Rashford and Foden have been interviewed in the media over the past few days they should be in the starting lineup. I don’t know if the Football Association or Southgate operate that way.
