In October 1982, during the period of martial law, the first issue of the monthly Fantastyka went on sale. In July 1990, Mieczysław Prószyński became the new publisher of the magazine taken over from the RSW company “Prasa-Książ-Ruch”, a state monopoly from the time of the Polish People’s Republic, and the magazine changed its title to “Nowa Fantastyka”. Forty years after its creation, this monthly is the only fantasy magazine printed continuously in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe and the world. In 2007, the magazine was honored by the Minister of Culture with the silver medal for merit in culture “Gloria Artis”.
From the very beginning, “Fantastyka” published the most outstanding representatives of this genre (in the first issue it began to publish in episodes the novels of George RR Martin and the Strugacki brothers). Monthly news published by famous writers and beginners from Poland and around the world, chronicles and essays, interviews, galleries, comics, articles and reviews and literary competitions were also organized. The covers of the magazine have been decorated with graphics by top artists, incl. Wojciech Siudmak, Zdzisław Beksiński, Tomasz Sętowski, Roch Urbaniak, Chris Achilleos, Frank Frazetta, Luis Royo and Donata Giancola.
Writers whose stories have appeared in the magazine include Ursula K. Le Guin, George RR Martin, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, among others. In December 1986, “The Witcher” by Andrzej Sapkowski was first published in the monthly. One of the most popular Polish comic heroes, Funky Koval, created by Bogusław Polch, Maciej Parowski and Jacek Rodek, was also born there. Authors who debuted in “Nowa Fantastyka” include, among others, Jacek Dukaj, Marek S. Huberath, Feliks W. Kres, Rafał Kosik, Wojciech Chmiel, Grzegorz Kasdepke and Radek Rak.
Jubilee celebration on Saturday, October 8 at Kulturoteka Falenica at ul. Walcownicza 4/6 in Warsaw will last all day.
The program includes, among other round tables “40 years have passed” with Maciej Makowski, Jacek Rodek, Arkadiusz Nakoniecznik and Jerzy Rzymowski, “Small and a bit bigger fantasy” with Grzegorz Kasdepke, Maciej Kur, Rafał Kosik and Piotr Bednarczyk, ” Mythology, folklore, fantasy” with Agnieszka Hałas, Aleksandra Klęczar, Jakub Ćwiek and Witold Vargas.
Adults and teenagers will be able to participate in the following events: “Story cubes – how to create urban fantasy?”, A workshop for teenagers based on the works of Jakub Ćwiek with elements of Norse mythology and urban fantasy, “Improvised Crime”, a workshop for teenagers around works by Wojciech Chmielarz, an encounter with Paweł Kopijer, author of fantasy novels in the series “Kroniki Dwuświata” and creator of the board game “Mitrys” and the workshop “Designing board games from fantastic books”. With children in mind, lessons in the study of the runic alphabet and its calligraphy have been prepared, as well as a game of literary stunts based on the works of Grzegorz Kasdepke.
The jubilee will be attended by “Star Wars” fans associated with “Legion 501st – Polish Garrison” in movie costumes. You will be able to see the best covers of the monthly Nowa Fantastyka.
