Floods in the Upper Vistula region – are we prepared for it?
Małgorzata Sikora has been Regional Director of PGW Woda Polskie Structures since 2018. She graduated from AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. She graduated from the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection in the field of environmental engineering, specializing in hydrogeology, engineering geology and water protection. Already November 8 – the second day GWiOP Congress will talk about the Flood Risk Management Plan in relation to flood protection in the water region of the Upper Vistula.
During her speech, the expert will present the outline of the Flood Risk Management Plan (PGRI), which is a key document covering all the elements flood risk managementwith particular emphasis on service activities flood prevention and protection against it. The speaker of the technical session of the Congress will discuss the activities related to flood protectionimplemented by Polish waters, taking into account the FRMP and the provisions of the Water Act.
RZGW in Krakow, which manages more than 47,000 km of rivers and streams and nearly 1,500 km of flood levees, is making a number of investments that globally protect residents from flooding – assures the Regional Director. – In 2022, in the field of anti-flood activities, we are implementing 39 investment projects for a total amount of more than PLN 265 million. However, it is planned to implement about 1,400 tasks for which we are seeking funding, for a total amount of more than PLN 71 billion. – highlighted.
The future belongs to advanced digital technologies – also in the field of flood protection
Currently, in hydrotechnical works, the use of digital solutions is becoming a standard, allowing water level monitoring and situations in real time. As a result, the communication between the hydrotechnical facilities, the operational centers and the services concerned is improved and, consequently, it strengthens the capacity of the public administration to effectively reduce the effects of floods.
Issues in this area will be presented by the second speaker on behalf of PGW Waters Polskie – Radosław Radoń, Deputy Director for Flood and Drought Protection of the RZGW in Krakow. For many years he was involved in his work hydrodynamic modeling and determination of flood zones. He is a doctoral student at the University of Agriculture, and the title of his doctoral thesis is: “The impact of certain anthropogenic factors on the risk of flooding”.
The expert will refer to the computer modeling of hydrological and hydraulic phenomena and will present how it has been used for many years by the competent authorities in Water Management, to determine the potential extent of flooded areas. It will show how numerical hydraulic models provide a methodical basis for floodplain designation for example in the context of flood and hazard maps, but they are also an important instrument at a later stage of planning and design work, i.e. detailed design, management of water installations, as well as the maintenance of entire river systems, for example as a means to support forecasting and response to flood events.
Radosław Radoń’s talk will be available during the technical session Flood protectionwhich will be held on the second day of the Congress – Tuesday 8 November.
Kongres #GWiOP2022 – science and business seek solutions to the effects of climate change
In days November 7-9 in Krakow will take place across the country Water Management and Flood Protection Congress. Participants include representatives from business, science, local and state authorities and anyone interested in the subject. water management, small retention, sponge city idea, green and blue urban infrastructure, rainwater harvesting and flood protection will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, conferences, demonstrations and technical visits.
The event will take place in the formula hybrid: it will be possible to participate directly in Krakow and on line through the platform AkademiaInzynieria.com
