“Eagle. The Last Patrol” is a tribute to all sailors who fought in World War II. At the same time, it’s a story that wars are useless – director Jacek Bławut told PAP during the Monday premiere of the film about the crew of the famous submarine. On Friday, the painting will be released in theaters.
The story begins in 1940, when the crew of the ORP “Orzeł” had already daringly escaped internment in Tallinn, a journey of almost a month during which they were hunted down and bombarded by the German fleet , in addition to being assigned to the Second U-boat Flotilla at Rosyth in Great Britain and the sinking of the German military transport ship “Rio de Janeiro” carrying soldiers and military equipment. On the evening of May 23, “Orzel” left for another North Sea expedition. The crew was mobilized instantly. Despite her great will to fight, the ship did not return from the mission. Its wreckage has never been found.
On the one hand, Jacek Bławut’s film is a tribute to these people, and on the other hand, a dream come true for a director who has been interested in the story of “Orzel” for many years. “This story had a secret. Besides, I wanted to meet the crew of the ship. While writing the screenplay, I spent many months collecting crumbs about the lives of these people. It’s fascinating that I can then being with them during filming, on set, and that I myself became a member of the crew at some point. These people deserve great respect. They were young. They had their whole lives ahead of them. Some may not even falling in love. They gave their lives meaning, just because a madman decided to kill – and it’s becoming very topical anyway – but they died to defend our values and important things. My film is, in a way, a tribute to all the sailors who fought in the Second World War. At the same time, it is a story that wars have no meaning “- the director pointed out in an interview with PAP.
The legendary ship Bławut made one of the heroes of cinema history. “We are talking about two organisms – man and ship – and the symbiosis in which they live, linked to life and death. If a human makes a mistake, everyone is killed. The same thing happens when one of the valves fails. It’s also a story about a common dying because we know what the end of the mission was. The crew didn’t return, and the destruction of the ship , the specter of impending death, the tightening loop, the lack of air – everything is felt on the screen.Usually in war movies, the enemy we are fighting is somewhere on the screen. the outside. In +Orle…+ the greatest enemy sits in the heads of the crew members. That’s what the picture is about – silence, trying to survive, determination and fighting until the end. Even if it seems that the fight is already lost, my heroes will not give up “- he stressed.
As the creator admitted, collecting documentation about “Orzel” and his crew was a laborious business. “I found Eryk Sopoćko’s book, General Sosnkowski’s diary and the scraps of letters. I decided it was a lot. Because if we find out that someone had a baby girl before they left at sea, what more could we get? This information is of great dramatic importance. In fact, I found a crumb of each of the team members. I found it unnecessary to focus on their stories , because we know what they lost, what they left on earth. Going to Hollywood war cinema was not the path that interested me “- he stressed.
In September of this year. the production was presented in the main competition of the 47th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. The authors were appreciated by the jury in the following categories: best make-up (Dariusz Krysiak), sound (Michał Fojcik and Radosław Ochnio), editing (Bartłomiej Piasek and Piotr Wójcik) and direction. “This prize shows that the jurors appreciated the way I directed the actors, the fact that I made a team, an organization. Documentary cinema, where I am interested above all in what they have to inside whether they will do what I expect of them.” I wanted to get to know them as people, to find out how they perceived this story. The truth was in them. We documentarians have our own way of relating to others. We give so much that we also receive something. in return,” Bławut said.
Work on the set was also mentioned by Tomasz Schuchardt, who played the first officer in “Orle …” – ship mechanic Florian Roszak. “We shot this film on a hot summer, in a hall, in parts of the spaceship reproduced at 1:1 scale. Usually, filmmakers like to work in more space than we can finally see. , so there was no more room. We had exactly as much as the crew of +Orzel+ Except that we had to let in the operator, the sound engineers, a whole team of people. cold rather than hot. In our case was quite the opposite. However, the generated sweat was supposed to convey the feeling of fear. The conditions were difficult, but they served an interesting adventure “- said the actor.
He added that the photos were taken in 2019, so he was even more interested in the final effect. “When the previews take place six months after the shooting of the film, it seems like being there yesterday. And this time I was surprised: I was there? I did not remember certain scenes and events. It’s beautiful that thanks to the cinema I was able to refresh them. I think that an ordinary spectator – who was not on a boat – can really touch this situation 1: 1, because in fact +Orzel . .. + – like all war movies – is against war, it shows the absurdity of war as such the whole story in the last mission + Orzel +, where in fact not much happened It becomes even more painful to show the story of dying young boys who had their parents, brothers, sisters. Someone had a wife, someone else – a girlfriend. They were all at this stage, they are somewhere in the North Sea and we don’t even know where, because they have not been found “- summed up Schuchardt.
