Williams caused a stir. The second racket in the world for the US Open Tennis

Before the start of the US Open Grand Slam, Serena Williams (605th WTA) declared that it would be her last tournament of her career. The American in the first round beat Danka Kovinić (80th WTA) 6: 3, 6: 3 and gave the signal that she was in good shape. A much more difficult test of form awaited him in the second round, in which the rival of the legend of the discipline was the second rocket in the world, Anett Kontaveit (2nd WTA).

A close first set and the championship opener for Williams. Quick response from Kontaveit

This match was very balanced from the start. The ladies won their service games and successfully defended breakpoints that appeared. The first breakout didn’t come until Game 9, and it was written out by Williams. The Estonian did not remain indebted to her and immediately made up for the loss, and two more games won by the servers led to a tie-break. In it, the two tennis players earned points after their passes for a long time. The key to the fate of this match was a small breakthrough by the American at 5: 3, which after some time gave her a 7: 4 victory

Kontaveit started the second set much better. The second rocket in the world openly zeroed in American service. After the sustained pass, the Estonian added another break, which gave her a 3-0 lead. Although Williams made up for the one-game loss in Game 4, the rival broke it for the third time after some time. Until the end of the stage, both players confidently won their service games which gave Kontaveit a 6:2 win and a draw.

Williams extended his last career start

The fight for the promotion was going to be very exciting. Williams quickly made it 2-0, adding the first break to the passing pass. Although the Estonian immediately made up for the loss, the rival owed her nothing and after the second break she came out 3: 1. The passers saved the next games on their account. In the seventh installment, Kontaveit had a chance to go back and get closer to the American, but she didn’t take advantage of it. Williams, on the other hand, had no problem with the break point, as they won the game after netting their opponent, and the whole game was 6:2.

The tennis legend thus remains in the fight to crown his rich career with the 24th Grand Slam title. Interestingly, the statistics don’t speak for the American woman. She committed 40 unforced errors in 37 knockouts, sending 11 service aces to the opposing team. In the third round, Williams will face Australian Alja Tomljanovic (46th WTA).
