This Saturday and Sunday (22-23.10) women will play for the first time in history at the TAURON Gigants of Volleyball. Chemik Police, Developres Rzeszów, SSC Palmberg Schwerin and SC Potsdam came to Twardogóra.
A month has passed since we got excited about the Polish-Belgian competition in the XIII TAURON Volleyball Giants Charity Tournament. Recall that last year’s title was defended by Jastrzębski Węgiel. However, this is not the end of the volleyball festival in Twardogóra, as the first edition of the TAURON Women’s Volleyball Giants awaits us this weekend.
The cast is very strong. The tournament is the last test before the start of the TAURON Liga. It will be played according to the formula of a Polish-German duel. The current Polish champion Grupa Azoty Chemik Police and the vice-champion of Developres Bella Dolina Rzeszów will go to the hall of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center. Our western neighbors will be represented by Plemberg Schwerin and SC Potsdam.
Schwerin is a 12-time national champion who last won this title in 2018. Potsdam, on the other hand, is a relatively young club, founded in 1996. With around 500 members, it is one of the biggest clubs volleyball from Germany. It has been playing in the highest league since 2009. The biggest success is the country’s second place in 2022.
Each of these four teams includes volleyball players who have been nominated for the world championships that have just ended. The middle man will come with the chemist to the competition Agnieszka Korneluk. For four years she performed in Wrocław, then in Łódź and Italy, and in 2020 she returned to Poland. She is the starting player of our national team, which for the first time in more than 60 years has qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Her friend from the club is Mary Stenzelfirst libero of the general staff.
On a daily basis, three more of our representatives play in Rzeszów – this one Anna Stencel, Aleksandra Szczyglowska and Katarzyna Wenerska. The participants in the world championships are also members of the invited German teams. The competition will therefore be very tough.
– Preparations have been going on for several months. These were parallel preparations for the men’s and women’s tournaments – said Tomasz Sobolewski, who works in the organization of the competition, and at the same time works in the Volleyball Federation of Lower Silesia. – There is a lot of work: transporting equipment, hosting teams, organizing training for them, but also people who want to work there. Everything must be closed, which was done by Wojciech Rozdolski, the tournament organizer and president of the Lower Silesian Volleyball Federation. – he adds.
– We regretted that women’s volleyball has been a bit neglected lately. We hope to change that. We would all like women’s volleyball to refer to the best traditions of European and perhaps world championships – he said in the summer Wojciech Rozdolski.
