October 3 – what unusual holidays?
October 3 is World Architecture Day. It is celebrated every year on the first Monday in October, which this year is today. On this day, the greatest examples of the work of architects around the world are especially appreciated. It is not only more than 4,000 Egyptian pyramids or the Great Wall of China or other gigantic modern buildings, but also, for example, unique single-family houses that make their life a unique experience.
Except that:
- We can also celebrate on October 3 of each year historical event, symbolized by Germany Unity Day. It is celebrated in memory of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany in 1990. On September 4, 1989, citizens of the communist German Democratic Republic staged a peaceful, anti-government demonstration in Leipzig, which was followed new protests and demonstrations. As a result of a happy coincidence, the Communist authorities allowed on November 9 of this year to leave for the Federal Democratic Republic of Germany. It was the beginning of the fall of the Berlin Wall, dividing a nation into two systems. In August 1990, the leaders of the two German countries signed the unification treaty, and the reunification of Germany became a reality on October 3, 1990.
- In addition, October 3 is also in the United States Great Awakening Day. It was created in March 1860, after US President Abraham Lincoln’s speech in which he opposed slavery and supported employee rights. Inspired by this speech, 5 vendors formed a group they called Wide Awakes and marched with torches to honor the president, escorting him to his hotel. As a thank you for this gesture, Lincoln popularized the group, and through its activity gained a host of new and young voters. The organization grew bigger and bigger, and by the time Lincoln was elected president, it already numbered 500,000 people. members. The group remained active for the next few decades, organizing rallies, cultural events, became something of a progressive think tank, and became a springboard for the careers of many politicians.
- October 3 is also Durga Ashtami, which is one of the most important Hindu festivals, also known as Navratri. During this festival, Hindus worship Goddess Durga – in 9 forms for 9 nights. Durga Ashtami celebration lasts for 10 days in total, during which special celebrations are held all over India.
- The same day also takes place sharing day. This holiday falls on the first Monday in October and aims to promote prosocial attitudes, such as sharing unused items with other people. So if, for example, you have a backlog of unnecessary clothes that could be useful to others, you can use this day as an impetus to donate unnecessary items to collection points or charity shops.
