24 teams compete for medals

The Volleyball World Championships started on Friday, September 23. There are 24 national teams in them, divided into four groups.

  • Group A: Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Cameroon, Kenya
  • Group B: Poland, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Korea, Thailand, Croatia
  • Group C: USA, Serbia, Germany, Bulgaria, Canada, Kazakhstan
  • Group D: Brazil, China, Japan, Colombia, Argentina, Czech Republic

The top four teams from each group will advance to the next phase. Group A will merge with group D and group B will merge with group C, the first phase being marked. Then there will be the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, the match for third place and the final. This last match is scheduled for October 15 (Saturday).

Six host cities, including Gdańsk

In Poland, volleyball players will play in Gdańsk, Łódź and Gliwice, in the Netherlands – in Arnhem, Apeldoorn and Rotterdam.

Group B matches with Poland will be played in Arnhem (opening match Poland – Croatia) and in Gdańsk (other meetings).

The second round will take place in Rotterdam and Łódź, the quarter-finals and semi-finals in Apeldoorna and Gliwice, the match for third place and the final in Arnhem.

The first victory of the Polish national team

Russia missed the tournament, which was banned by the World Volleyball Federation (FIVB) from all official competitions. It was replaced by Croatia, with whom the Polish national team played the first day of the tournament, Friday September 23.

Coach Stefano Lavarini’s charges played fantastically in the first set, especially blocking. In attack, the most effective was Magdalena Stysiak, who was 67% effective (12 attacks). The rivals dominated in the second game, in the third the Poles already lost 8:16, but they made 22:20 and they did not give up the set again. In the fourth installment, it was 7:7, then m.in. Maria Stenzel defended excellently and her friends counterattacked perfectly.

Matches in Gdańsk from Tuesday to Saturday

Polish volleyball players will play the next World Championship Group B matches at the Ergo Arena in Gdańsk and Sopot. They will play successively with Thailand (Tuesday September 27), South Korea. (Wednesday September 28), Dominican Republic (Thursday September 29) and Turkey (Saturday October 1).

A total of 12 matches will be played in Gdańsk. There are still tickets for the September match days, the ones for October 1 are missing. Tickets available on ebilet.pl from PLN 29.
