The second championship tournament in Poland
In 2016, Poland hosted the European Handball Championship. At that time, the host cities were Kraków, Katowice, Wrocław and Gdańsk. The Germans became European champions, the Spaniards were runners-up, the Croats won the bronze medal. Whites and Reds placed seventh.
In 2023, the World Handball Championship is jointly organized by Sweden and Poland. 32 national teams will be competing from January 11 to 29. The host cities are Gothenburg, Malmoe, Stockholm, Kristianstad and Jonkoping (Sweden) as well as Katowice, Płock, Krakow and Gdansk.
The league title is defended by the Danes, who beat the Swedes in the final in 2021.
Division into world championship groups
The group stage of the World Handball Championship will take place from January 11 to 17, 2023. The Polish national team will play its matches in this part of the tournament in Katowice.
Division into groups:
- Group A: Spain, Montenegro, Chile, Iran
- Group B: Poland, France, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia
- Group C: Sweden, Brazil, Cape Verde, Uruguay
- Pool D: Iceland, Portugal, Hungary, South Korea
- Group E: Germany, Qatar, Serbia, Algeria
- Group F: Norway, North Macedonia, Argentina, Netherlands
- Group G: Egypt, Croatia, Morocco, USA
- Group H: Denmark, Belgium, Bahrain, Tunisia
Promotion to next round, that is, the main stage will be awarded to the top three teams in each group. The 8 weakest teams will play for places 25-32.
Division into groups in the main phase
Teams from Groups A and B will form Group I (six teams in total). The other groups will be connected in the same way.
Group teams C and D will form group II.
The teams of groups E and F will form group III.
Teams from Groups G and H will form Group IV.
Important: The results of the matches between the teams of the first phase of the tournament will be kept. In the main phase, the teams will only play against the teams of the opposing group.
The top two teams from Groups I, II, III and IV will qualify for the quarter-finals. The others will compete for places 9 to 24.
Three matches in Gdansk
The decisive matches of the world championship – starting from the quarter-finals – will take place in two cities: Stockholm and Gdańsk. They will take place at the Ergo Arena two quarter-finals and a semi-final, the remaining matches, including those for the medals, in the Swedish capital at Tele2 Arena.
The quarter-finals in Gdańsk are scheduled for January 25 (Wednesday). They will face:
- at. 18.00 first team of group I – second team of group III
- at. 8:30 p.m. group III team – the second team of group I
One of the two semi-finals will also take place in our city. January 27 (Friday) at. At 6:00 p.m., the winners of the two quarter-finals above will play.
