The Foreign Ministry announced that Finland would support grain shipments from Ukraine to Somalia under the World Food Program (WFP).
The country will also increase its humanitarian aid to the famine in the Somali peninsula.
According to a press release published on Tuesday 8 November, Finland will allocate 15.7 million euros in humanitarian aid for the region. Of this amount, approximately 7 million euros will be allocated to help the WFP transport Ukrainian cereals to Somalia.
The rest of the humanitarian aid will be provided by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the Finnish Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Emphasis will be placed on food security, but also on the protection of refugees, who number approximately 3.5 million in the region.
The number of people in need of food aid is much larger, around 20 million. The Somali peninsula is suffering from a record drought after the fifth unsuccessful rainy season in a row.
“Our humanitarian aid will enable people to find shelter, clean water and health services. They are missing both in the local community and in the refugee camps,” said the Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. City Skinnari.
