Normally, the US midterm elections do not attract much attention from the international community.
Normally, debates between senator and gubernatorial candidates revolve around national and regional issues that have no bearing on world events.
But something like “normalcy” no longer exists in a country in existential crisis since Donald Trump came to power. Also, for a long time it looked like America would take another step into the abyss after these congressional and state elections.
How strong is Trump’s influence?
That’s why the eyes of the whole world were on the USA on November 8th. The worrying question was whether Donald Trump and his supporters would succeed in further undermining democratic systems and those who denied the results of the recent presidential elections, racists and right-wing extremists hold positions in the institutions that will determine the state of law in the coming years. state election chief.
Therefore, the question was whether Donald Trump would be able to continue his destructive policy outside the White House, which culminated on January 6, 2021 in the form of his supporters storming the Capitol in Washington.
The strongest ruling party in history
Donald Trump has failed to achieve his goals. Fears that large-scale political responsibility would be handed over to his supporters in the United States have not materialized. The exact opposite has happened: For decades, no governing party has done as well as President Joe Biden’s Democrats in this midterm election.
Early polls show that US residents are most concerned about economic issues. Also in the United States, housing prices are skyrocketing in some areas, inflation is high and there are major concerns about the country’s future.
These polls also show that many Americans are deeply concerned about the state of their democracy – and have come to realize that not voting is in favor of bigots. Attendance was therefore exceptionally high.
Early voters want to protect the environment
It is striking that a particularly high number of young people voted for the first time. For them, the fight against climate catastrophe is particularly important also in the United States. And it’s a subject that almost all Republicans ridicule.
All of this – including the abortion rights debate – has halted Trump’s Republican march to victory.
All of this strengthens President Biden, although with the likely loss of a Democratic majority in Congress, governance will certainly not be easy for him.
Can Republicans get there though?
The big question is what this result means for the Republican Party. Will she be able to reverse this trend? Now, when is there evidence that Trump’s extreme actions are not supported nationally by the majority? Will Donald Trump announce his presidential candidacy next week? Will people like Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida who secured his victory because he walked away from Trump, have the courage to oppose him?
The time after the election is always the period before the election. President Biden has made it clear that this Democratic success is his and announced that he and his wife Jill will decide early next year whether to run for the White House again.
These questions call for an answer in the days and weeks to come. But for now, the world can breathe. American democracy, now almost dying, is still alive. That’s very good news.
