Poles receive SMS from an unknown number +48669979971. Nothing in particular? Not at all – this time the real police are asking for a contact.
“You received an SMS from authors pretending to be Inpost or PGE”we read in the currently mass sent message from number +48669979971. “If you lost money because of this, please contact us urgently”continues the broadcaster, which refers to CBZC.
Contrary to appearances, this time it’s not a scam, but organized action of the Central Office for the Fight against Cybercrime. Police officers in Krakow are actively looking for victims of online scams with fake payments in the lead role in order to collect the necessary evidence to continue the investigation against the scammers.
A police action is underway: understandable, but risky
This information was provided on Twitter by Niebezpiecznik, referring to the CyberAlert sent in this case. This is also confirmed by police sources. In other words, if you receive a request like this, don’t panic – and if you think the police can help you, just contact them.
Police sent text messages asking for contact. Hundreds of thousands of people will get them. Those who may have been victims of SMS attacks: https://t.co/xwn4Go5zmm
They send 669979971. The first ones have already received and asked us what is going on. We have therefore decided to send a CyberAlert on this subject. pic.twitter.com/zeUTidzf5t

The thing is, the police didn’t seem to think about it. Sending text messages, and without Polish diacritics, doesn’t sound believable. Moreover, considering the question identity thefti.e. the ability to impersonate a given number, it seems risky to advertise one of them as trusted.
In the end, as is usually the case, common sense is key. Anyway, know that the mysterious SMS in this case is not from scammers.
