It all happened last Thursday near Raglan in Monmouthshire, Wales. Rebecca Comins, 52, from Caldicot, was hit by a van while cycling on the A40 road.
The tragic death of a triathlete
The sad news was announced by Caldicot Rugby on their official Twitter account.
“The Board, players and members of Caldicot RFC are saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Rebecca Comins. Becky has made a huge contribution to the club as the first team masseuse and first responder. Our condolences and our best wishes to Steve, George, Millie and his family” – we read in the post.
A 47-year-old bus driver from the Abergavenny area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by reckless driving. He was released during the investigation and will be charged free foot. Police have urged anyone with information about the accident to contact them.
She died doing what she loved
Rebecca Comins regularly participated in triathlon competitions. Four years ago, she won 9th place at the European Championships. She has represented Great Britain at European and World Championships. She was also the fastest woman in the Swansea and Minehead triathlons. When she died, she was preparing for the next contest.
She was remembered by her family as a “caring and loving mother” of two children during a touching farewell. “Our beautiful Rebecca was taken from us on Thursday, June 2, while she was doing something she loved,” write the sportswoman’s relatives.
“She was a caring and loving wife to Stephen and an amazing mum to George and Millie,” they added. They also ask everyone to respect their privacy at this sad time and allow them to mourn this tragedy with their family.
