In the so-called Guinness World Record was broken by representatives of the authorities of Gdańsk, amber craftsmen and representatives of the Gdańsk Regional Bureau of Measurements and the National Bureau of Guinness Records.
AMBER NOT JUST ON THE BEACH
The director of the Gdańsk museum, Waldemar Ossowski, explained that amber is not only a small piece that can be found after a storm somewhere on Sobieszewo beach, it is also a piece that the can be discovered in a mine of lignite in Sumatra, weighing up to several tens of kilograms.
– Amber is discovered not only in Poland, but on practically all continents. It may be 2 million years old or more than 100 million years old, he pointed out.
He added that amber very often contains inclusions that give an idea of what life on earth was like many years ago.
A HOLIDAY RECORD
Ahead of Tuesday’s Guinness World Record attempt, the huge hunk was removed from a display case and placed on the scale. Experts confirmed its authenticity, and representatives of the Gdańsk Regional Bureau of Measurements weighed it. Weight measurement indicated: 68 kg and 200 grams. After all, the exposure was subjected to additional laser measurements.
Waldemar Ossowski pointed out that on the day of the weighing of amber, that is, June 28, World Amber Day is celebrated.
– This is an important day for everyone who loves amber and we are happy that a record has been set on this holiday – announced the director of the Gdańsk Museum.
According to museum spokesman Dr. Andrzej Gierszewski, the current record holder in the category of largest amber in the world was a piece weighing more than fifty kilograms from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which is in the collection. from a private collector. . The exhibit presented in Gdańsk also comes from Sumatra and was purchased with a grant from the National Institute of Museology and Collections Protection.
