Coronavirus vaccines. Poland wants to “redefine” contracts
The Polish Minister of Health has spoken on this subject. A member of the government in Brussels argued that Poland had signaled in the first half of this year that such a risk existed.
We really need to deal with this problem redefine contracts – commented Adam Niedzielski.
– Currently most countries are of the opinion that contracts and their implementation should be suspendedthat the surpluses we have in our warehouses are enough for the near future – argued the head of the Polish Ministry of Health.
Buying vaccines today makes no sense
As he pointed out, all countries have a different epidemic situation, but at the same time the feeling that “buying these funds makes no sense”. Therefore, Poland presented its own point of view at the meeting, in which it invoked the force majeure clause not to accept vaccine deliveries in the near future.
He also announced that the European Commission at the meeting announced the appointment of a special steering committee at the political level. This committee – as he added – will address the issue of suspending vaccine supply contracts until they are renegotiated. The second topic of conversation was post-pandemic mental health, for both adults and children.
On the one hand, all countries feel the lack of specialists capable of fully caring for the population. On the other hand, these social stressors, namely the pandemic, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine or the economic situation in which we feel high prices and inflation, are common elements. (…) The year 2023 will be devoted to mental health. Also in 2023, we will finalize work on EU documents which, by defining the approach to mental health in a very broad way, will show how to build optimal models, stressed Adam Niedzielski.
The union defends the contracts?
How we wrote in money.pl in april, Poland has already addressed this issue at the time. – We have asked both the European Commission and the big companies producing vaccines to do so the deliveries, which were planned in such large numbers in the coming quarters, it is enough to spread them over time to give you more flexibility, freedom of these contractswhich we concluded – the politician then informed.
For example, if these deliveries are to take place by the end of 2023, we have proposed – this was, among other things, in Prime Minister Morawiecki’s letter to President von der Leyen – to spread these deliveries over 10 years and – above all – to pay when we receive vaccines – explained Minister Adam Niedzielski.
He recalled that the negotiations on the purchase of vaccines were led by the European Commission. He referred to the statement that the contract “has largely tied our hands”. – Yes, these are serious financial burdens. We in particular – here I am talking about Poland – are currently experiencing financial strains linked to the influx of refugees, so we also believe that we have a certain EU-wide right to wait for special instruments that will give us, for example, greater flexibility in these contractswill be designed for us and there will be some freedom – he noted.
