Wars, natural disasters, social conflicts, major refugee crises. The past 30 years have been filled with sudden and tragic events. From besieged Sarajevo, through battle-torn Chechnya, Syria and Sudan, to the elements-stricken Indonesia, Somalia and Nepal – everywhere, Polish humanitarian action has rushed to bring immediate help.
– For three decades we have been operating in the places of the greatest humanitarian crises in the world – says Dorota Serafin, Director General of the Polish Humanitarian Organization. – However, last year turned out to be a unique test for the organization, which, on an equal footing with international partners, provided assistance to Ukraine and Poland.
The events of 2022 show how important the long-term presence of PAHs is in places of protracted crises. The foundation now works in 10 countries on 3 continents, employing hundreds of skilled aid workers from around the world. For 30 years, it has provided professional and effective help to more than 14.5 million people in 51 countries.
– Such massive support for victims of crises would not be possible without the solidarity and commitment of ordinary Poles, businesses and institutions – notes Rafał Grzelewski from the Polish Humanitarian Organization. – It is the social trust that accompanies us on a daily basis that translates into real help.
This work is not yet finished, because new and great challenges await the world. Next year, as many as 339 million people will need support from organizations such as the Polish Humanitarian Organization. Almost 18 million of them are just beyond our eastern border.
“Over the years, the scale and scope of the activities have expanded, but the goal has remained the same: not to leave a person in need without help”, explains Łukasz Skoczylas, team leader of the HAP mission. – We are happy to be able to celebrate this day with all those who are not indifferent to the suffering of another human being.
