Pele, who turned 82 in October, had been hospitalized at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo for nearly a month. After a few days in the establishment, it was announced in a communication that the oncological disease had worsened, and the daily “Folha de S. Paulo” reported that he was receiving palliative care.
Pelé is the only three-time football world champion. He won with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
Considered one of the best footballers in history, Pelé has been battling bowel cancer for nearly two years. In early September 2021, he underwent surgery for a colon tumor. In addition to digestive issues, he had been suffering from hip issues for years.
Pele is dead
Pelé, aka Edson Arantes in Nascimentowas born on October 23, 1940 near the town of Bauru, in the town of Tres Coracoes (Three Hearts). From Bauru he went to the FC Santos club, then to the national team, with which he triumphed three times in the World Cup. Throughout his career, he scored 1,283 goals in 1,367 games according to his autobiography; although other sources say there were 1,284 in 1,356 games.
However, before Pele’s nickname became known to the world, little Edson started out as a ragshoe on the streets of Bauru, wanting to earn a football uniform. He was scouted by former Santos player Waldemar de Brito. And Edson became a member of the Bauru Athletic Club (BAC) junior team, called Baquinho (short for BAC).
At the age of 10, he witnessed the despair of his father and other adults who survived Brazil’s loss to Uruguay in the game that decided the world title. It was then that he promised his father that he would “avenge this shame” and beat Uruguay in the World Cup.
“I will win the World Cup for you one day,” Joao Ramos told Nascimento, known as Dondinho in the family. As it turned out years later, he kept his word.
His talent was quickly noticed and in 1956, he became a footballer for the FC Santos club. He remained faithful to him until 1974. From there it was only a step to the national team. With the national team, 17-year-old Pelé traveled to Sweden in 1958 for his first world championship.

Initially, he didn’t have a place in the starting XI, and on top of that, he suffered from a knee injury. When coach Feol finally left him on the pitch in the quarter-final against Wales, he showed what he was capable of. His goal gave the Canarinhos access to the next round. In the semi-final against France, Pelé scored three goals in 22 minutes (5-2) and in the final against Sweden (5-2), he scored two more. At 17, he became world champion, something no one before or after him did. No wonder he cried like a beaver in the arms of Gilmar’s bouncer.
Four years later, he cries, but this time in despair when, after two games, an injury prevents him from continuing to play in the World Cup in Chile, won by Brazil. Tears flowed from brutal fouls by his opponents, including Bulgarian defender Dobromir Żeczew and Portugal’s Joao Morais, also in the World Cup four years later in England. He was carried off the field on a stretcher and Brazil did not come out of the group.
At the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, he triumphed for the third time, after a 4-1 final victory against Italy. He scored the first goal of this game. He left the field on the shoulders of his teammates… He scored 12 goals in the final stages of the World Cup, and a total of 77 goals for the national team in 91 games in 1957-71.
In 1975, he signed a contract with the New York Cosmos. Pelé and other famous players, including the German Franz Beckenbauer or the Englishman Bobby Moore, contributed to the popularization of European “football” in America, and in addition, they improved the budgets, because not without reason the club of stars was called the “millionaires’ club”. Pelé stopped performing in New York in 1976, and on October 1, 1977, he played a farewell match in the colors of his beloved Santos.
king of football
The ball brought him fame and money. He always looked out for his own interests. He designed kangaroo leather shoeswhich were produced especially for him and named in his honor “King”. They sold like hot cakes for many years. He starred in John Huston’s film “Escape to Victory”, with the participation of Bobby Moore and… Kazimierz Deyna. He finally stayed Brazilian sports minister (1995-98).
In the poll of the French newspaper “L’Equipe” he was recognized as the best sportsman of the 20th century, and in the plebiscite of the magazine “World Soccer” in 1999 – as the best footballer of the last century.
