James Cameron achieved another financial success thanks to avatar: water being. It is the director’s third film among the ten highest-grossing productions in history, after Avatar and Titanic. The latter also won 11 Oscars, including Best Director.
When Cameron accepted the individual Oscar, he ended his speech with, “I’m the king of the world!”, quoting a line uttered in the film by Leonardo DiCaprio. Over the years, this situation has been cited by some recipients as an example of self-confidence. I am Cameron now took the floor in that case.
I was touched by these words. I think some people took it as an example of arrogance or boastfulness, even though that was not my intention. I wanted to express the joy and excitement I felt about this film, and for the character of Leonardo, it was the moment at the bow of the ship that was the happiest. I learned that when you win an Oscar, you don’t quote your own movie because it’s embarrassing. The assumption then is that you probably won’t win by a hair, but everyone in the audience has seen and enjoyed the movie. I have certainly been chastised for this situation for 25 years, but we learn from our mistakes. What was taken as arrogance or showing the middle finger was not intentional at all. You have to be careful when giving your winning speech.
Cameron added that while joking with Sally Field – who in her famous speech shouted ‘You really love me!’ They have their own private support group.
