Things are not going well for Die Linke. The programmatic quarrels of the German left – always present – have worsened still further, a political earthquake is in the air. There are several reasons, but the most important – look for the woman!

Sahra Wagenknecht, the most visible figure on the German left today, has serious problems with and with her own political base. With his independent, even revolutionary views, he no longer really suits him.

Such a “party shift” is nothing new in the German left. However, in this case it is not only about the program, but above all about the temperament. Wagenknecht, 53, is independent, uncompromising and ideologically incorruptible. In each party to which she belonged – and there have already been several -, at some point, it became too tight for her, too schematic, without revolutionary fervor. It’s no different now.

Instead of marching in a single line, “implementing party arrangements”, the Wagenknecht emphasizes its independence at every step. At rallies, he vigorously disassociates himself from the current party line, and during television talk shows, of which he is a frequent guest, he criticizes party leaders. In reaction, some of them accuse her of deliberately dismantling the party, they even see her as a right-wing mole.

The party Die Linke was founded in 2007. At that time, for the first time in German history, it managed to combine various left-wing traditions and create a party, albeit a pluralist one: a political miracle, but also an experience. There was never a shortage of left currents in Germany, so the creators of Die Linke were spoiled for choice – from the roots of the German and international labor movement, from pacifist, anti-fascist, social, communist, democratic organizations socialists, environmentalists and feminists.
