Improved security, more mental hospital beds and even revisiting the controversial issue of bail reform are just some of the promises Kathy Hochul, 65, announced in the annual state address. As she admitted, her goal is to provide residents with a “New York dream.”
We will make New York safer. We will make New York more affordable. We will create more jobs and opportunities for New Yorkers today and tomorrow,” the governor said during Tuesday’s speech in Albany before the State Assembly.
During the ceremony, she unveiled her plan to “realize the New York dream”, which includes no less than 147 initiatives, including a strategy to overcome the housing crisis and provide more than 800,000 apartments over the course of the next decade.
Hochul also said that to achieve the intended goal, it is necessary to improve the situation of patients with mental illness. The governor announced that his administration would provide, among other things, 1,000 additional beds in psychiatric hospitals and 3,500 commercial premises for the sick.
The Democrat also touched on controversial bail law reform and called for “thoughtful discussion” during budget discussions that could potentially lead to changes to existing laws. The governor also announced a statewide minimum wage increase to combat inflation. As the New York Post points out, the Democrat made no mention of the immigration crisis in her 47-minute speech.
