Many goalkeepers did very well at the World Cup in Qatar. The group is so large that it is really difficult to choose one in particular for the best eleven of the event. Each type will turn against you. In an interview with ‘PrzeglÄ…d Sportowy’, Luca Marchegiani assesses this year’s World Cup goalkeepers.
Bono the best, Livakovic enjoyed
The Italian was a 1994 World Cup runner-up when Italy lost in final on penalties against Brazil. Marchegiani was a substitute at the time. Bono in particular caught his eye in Qatar, and he led his team to pfinau, defending a penalty against Spain along the way. “I think he did a great job and I would give him the highest rating. The Moroccan is the symbol of a team that concedes very few goals. He uses his conditions very well, positions himself very well and covers the way to the goal. He has proven that many times. I have seen him in Sevilla games before, but I have never seen him as confident as here.
He also tries to appreciate Dominik Livakovic, who has been the hero of other penalty shootout competitions. It was thanks to him that Croatia eliminated Brazil in the quarter-finals. Previously, she did it with Japan. – I knew him a little less, and compared to other players in this position, he especially impressed me by the fact that he uses the physical conditions in an extremely effective way. Against an attacking opponent, he occupies, so to speak, a good place, and in many situations he seems bigger and bigger than he really is. In the penalty shootout with Japan and Brazil, he turned out simply brilliant – says Marchegiani for “PrzeglÄ…d Sportowy”.
Happy in the elite
The Italian believes that Wojciech Szczęsny is not necessarily appreciated enough in his native country. He ranks among the top five goalkeepers in the world. – I greatly admire. He is an exceptional player who, in my opinion, is among the five or six best in the world in his field. Belongs to the elite. Next to him, from my point of view, there is only Thibaut Courtois, Alisson BeckerEderson I Gianluigi Donnarumma said the former goalkeeper. “Marc Andre ter Stegen and Hugo Lloris are very good goalkeepers, but they are not at the level of the previously mentioned ones. In Italy, sometimes it seems to me that we don’t fully appreciate Szczęsny. We don’t rate him as well that he deserves it.
Asked about the Polish national team goalkeeper’s greatest assets, Luca Marchegiani says he is a complete goalkeeper, but for him Szczęsny’s reflexes are the most valuable. He also shared the opinion that for him the Pole should always be Juventus’ number one goalkeeper.
