Retail sales at constant prices in December 2022 increased by 0.2%. compared to the same period of 2021, the Central Statistics Office reported. On a monthly basis, an increase of 13.1% was recorded.

“In December 2022, the largest increase in retail sales (in constant prices) compared to the corresponding period of 2021, among the groups presented, was recorded by entities trading in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, orthopedic products (by 7. 6% compared to an increase of 18.8% percent a year ago).Sales also increased in the groups “textiles, clothing, footwear” (by 7.2%) and “food, beverages and tobacco products ” (by 1.9%). The largest drop in sales was recorded by entities classified in the group “furniture, electronics, household appliances” (by 10.4%)” – we keep reading.
Inflation is taking its toll
It should be taken into account that the December data is not the best indicator of the state of the economy and of public sentiment. Retail sales in the last month of the year are still disrupted by purchases related to Christmas gifts. The activity of Poles in this area always overestimates the statistics, which can be seen in the data on a monthly basis. The slight year-on-year increase shows that inflation is still noticeable.
