El Salvador made history in September 2021 by becoming the first country in the world to adopt it as legal tender. Now there is a proposal from US politician Wendy Rodgers. She would like the cryptocurrency to be legal tender in Arizona. Nevertheless, given Rogers’ position in the United States, the chances of his plan succeeding are slim.

Criticism of bitcoin as legal tender

Plans to rebrand Bitcoin as legal tender have already been criticized by various quarters in the United States. According to Rohan Grey, assistant professor at Williamette University, Bitcoin in this form would even be in violation of the constitution. The US Constitution states that states have the right to issue their own currency.

Rogers believes that the introduction of Bitcoin as legal tender is diametrically opposed to this provision of the constitution. Indeed, there is something that with the introduction of Bitcoin like this, the state would lose control of money. On the other hand, adopting Bitcoin as legal tender is also a free choice. Nobody is forcing the state of Arizona to do that.

A controversial politician

However, we should not now expect America to immediately accept Bitcoin as legal tender on demand. Rogers has a dubious reputation and is deeply entrenched in the far right. For example, many believe he was part of the group behind the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

These are the so-called “Oath Keepers”, of which Rogers is an important part. Prosecutors say the group, along with the Proud Boys and Three Percenters, were responsible for the attack on the Capitol.

Therefore, it is unclear whether we as Bitcoiners should be happy with Rogers’ initiative. In general, she does not belong to the group of politicians who inspire large groups of people to good deeds. Most Americans want nothing to do with it, so this action can generate negative feelings towards Bitcoin.

El Salvador and the Central African Republic

As of this writing, Bitcoin is only legal tender in El Salvador and the Central African Republic. Two countries that compete on the fringes of the global financial system and that no one really takes seriously on the world stage. On the other hand, we must not forget that Bitcoin has only been around since 2009, and in this regard, it is a good idea that two countries have already adopted it as legal tender. Maybe in the future they will pioneer such a solution.

After all, there’s no business behind them, and therefore no marketing team trying to increase adoption. The only marketing done for Bitcoin is from people who believe in the project and choose Bitcoin as their primary means of savings.

The fact that Bitcoin is still working and evolving after 14 years says a lot about the power of this technology. More and more people are seeing value in the absolute scarcity of Bitcoin, which can be sent halfway around the world in minutes.
