World Cup for Europeans. Who will become world champion?

France with Belgium and Croatia with England will meet in the semi-finals of the World Cup. The longer the tournament lasts, the more the World Championships resemble the European Championships.

Only Brazil and Uruguay, outside our continent, reached the round of 16. The medals will be distributed among themselves by the Europeans themselves.

The Croats narrowly, the British by surprise

The last to break through the Russians were the Croats, who reached the medal zone after a shocking spectacle ended in penalties. The story of Russia’s performances at the World Cup is a ready-made scenario for an obsessively didactic film about how Stanisław Cherchesov’s unloved and misunderstood campaign, day by day, match by match, becomes a group of scoundrels who do not bend to any force, for example the great Spaniards. Almost, with one or maybe two successful kicks, the action of this film would have continued.

The Croatians are still writing their own history, as they suffered two overtimes and penalties. I wonder in what condition they will appear in Luzhniki in a few days to face a happy and better rested England. Harry Kane and his friends did not impress with their game, but they confidently dominated (2-0) the Swedes, who, surprisingly even for themselves (although deservedly), got here . And Zlatan Ibrahimović was not needed for that. From now on, the English or the Croatians will be at least vice-world champions.

French and Belgians, candidates for champions

On the other hand, in theory the French could probably have more advantages, but will there be anyone who will deny the big Belgians a chance? They beat the Uruguayans first (2-0) without Edinsna Cavani. The latter resisted the pressure and did not give in against the Brazilians (2:1). If I had to predict a champion, I would look for it in this pair.

The stars of these teams will be remembered long after the championship. Not for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are already on vacation. No Neymar, who will be remembered – perhaps unfairly – for his rolling on the grass and his complex style. They will not become world champions or even top scorers.

Today, fans are much more impressed with 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe not only because of his incredible jumps and efficiency during the match between the French and Argentina. It’s true that he also had an acting episode where he pretended to be hurt, but that won’t form the basis for the overall assessment. And yet, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Ngolo Kante and… in fact, we could cite the entire eleven and the replacements, are alongside Mbappé on the pitch.

The names of the Belgian team make almost the same impression. Romelu Lukaku, who was instrumental in the victory against Brazil, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and, of course, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. They are all candidates for the World Cup eleven. So did Luka Modric from Croatia and Harry Kane, the English marksman.

A generation of talented footballers

The four teams who will remain in Russia until mid-July to play for gold or bronze medals will meet representatives of an exceptionally talented generation of footballers from their country. For the Croatians, with Modric (34 years old), it is probably the last chance (already used) to achieve great success. The French can scare their opponents for many years. Most Belgians and English will probably also be present at the next big events.

But for now, it’s emotions that will decide the medals next week.
