What is Google News?

What is Google News (aka Google News)? This is the name of the service officially presented in 2006, the aim of which is to present the latest information from the country and the world.

How to enable Google News?

On some mobile devices, Google News is installed by default, while on others, to access Google News on your phone you need to install the free application of the same name.

It is available in Google game and in App store. After downloading the program, simply find the Google News icon on the screen of your mobile device. You can also use the widget (by swiping the screen horizontally to the left), which allows you to quickly access news without having to launch the application.

How does Google News work?

Google News comes from various websites indexed by the Google search engine and considered credible. The information published is divided into several categories:

• Business,
• Science and technology,
• Entertainment,
• Sport.

The user can also sort content by local news (selected based on geolocation), from a given country or from around the world. Everything is linked to a Google account, thanks to which search results are consistent with the settings, preferences and tastes of a given user, regardless of the device used to view them.

Google News in your browser

Google News comes in two versions: Navigator (intended for computers, laptops and tablets) and mobile, for smartphones. When starting the service on a computer, we can use the search bar for topics, locations and sources, located at the very top, as well as the panels located on the left and right. The information selected by the Google search engine was placed in a central and honorable place on the screen.

The screenshot below shows that Google News in Polish provides lots of useful information. In the lower right corner you can see a block dedicated to the weather forecast for the coming days (degrees Fahrenheit, Celsius or Kelvin to choose from), while at the bottom there is a list of current topics, i.e. a list of expressions currently most frequently searched for on the Polish Internet. Meanwhile, on the left side you can quickly access the news: the most important for a given day (Featured Articles), personalized (For you), checked in (You look) and selected by the editors (Showcase in the news).

What does Google News look like on your phone? Very similar to Google News on a computer – the most important articles of the last 30 days are displayed first, while local news and news selected especially for the Google account user are presented below (category For you). The app will learn the user’s preferences and, over time, the messages it delivers will be more consistent with their interests.

How to use Google News?

Anyone interested in the latest news from around the country and the world should familiarize themselves with how Google News works. In addition to viewing messages, the service also allows you to: add various topics to your favorites, save your own searches and selected articles (to read them later) too share more interesting posts and channelsfor example via Facebook or Twitter.

Depending on the mobile device and the version of the app, the user can also specify languages ​​and regions of interest, configure the display of Google News in dark mode and activate the data saving mode or so-called mini-cards, i.e. articles with smaller images and fonts. From the settings level, you can also specify whether videos included in Google News should be played automatically.

How do I subscribe to a Google News feed?

Subscribing to your favorite channels on Google News is very easy. To do so, simply click on the button Followwhich is located at the top right. You can follow both specific channels and topics. However, if the user does not want to save messages to his account, simply use the search engine for topics, places and sources located at the very top and when it displays the results, simply browse the content that interests us.

You can return to previously saved content in Google News by clicking on the tab Look at, which is in the left panel. However, when the content offered by Google does not fully correspond to the User’s preferences, this can be reported by clicking on the button More and selecting an option Fewer articles of this type. The news aggregator learns in real time. The collected articles are sorted according to their relevance and grouped into thematic groups, which results in a clearly visible improvement in the quality of service with each use.
