Scientists have no doubt: the Earth will not be able to avoid a collision with a powerful comet approaching it, and its consequences will be catastrophic. Prominent engineer John Garrity (Gerard Butler) and his family are among the select group of people who are offered safe shelter by the authorities in a secret bunker in a remote region. The majority of society does not have this opportunity. As fragments of the disintegrating comet destroy city after city and kill thousands of people, the world plunges into chaos. Riots break out, robberies are on the agenda, and the services lose control of the situation. In such circumstances, reaching the evacuation site becomes a deadly challenge. But John is ready to do anything to save his wife and beloved son. The next few dozen hours will decide everything – this is the plot of Ric Roman Waugh’s “Greenland”, which can be seen in Polish cinemas from September 25.
On celluloid, the world has already ended in different ways. Moreover, in the era of ubiquitous special effects, with which almost anything can be depicted, and the only limit is the imagination of creators, things are happening on the screens that – following in the footsteps of the famous hero of a certain Polish sitcom – physiologists never dreamed of.
And so, our planet was already riddled with holes by gigantic asteroids, huge tornadoes destroyed everything in their path, and huge skyscrapers shattered like matches after the attack of bloodthirsty alien invaders. And the viewers? They watch all this while munching on popcorn. And they wait to see what else will be destroyed.
We can certainly expect a spectacular explosion from “Greenland”, but before we sit down in the cinema seats, let’s take a look at a selection of disaster movies from the history of cinema.
