The first offspring of the crowned crown at the Gdańsk Zoo
– This is the first breeding of this species in our zoo! – informed the post from Gdańsk on Facebook.
Crowned Spotted Crown (Latin name: Goura victoria, English name: Victoria Crowned Pigeon) is the largest representative of the pigeon family. He is also considered the most beautiful pigeon in the world.
This bird has blue-gray plumage and a characteristic fan-shaped crest on the head, black and white in color, with a spatulate shape at the tip. For this reason, it is compared to a decorative peacock train.
Down 2012 the spotted crown has been classified as a species vulnerable to extinction. It now has Near Threatened status.
A bird that doesn’t like to fly
The mottled crown usually rests on the ground, where it searches for food. It flies through the air reluctantly and as a last resort, such as when a predator appears. It seeks safe hiding places among the treetops for the night.
It eats fruits, berries, seeds and insects.
Unique on a European scale. Maned cheetahs were born in Gdańsk Zoo
Nest building, incubation and rearing of offspring in crowned beetles are done jointly by female and male. Chicks in the first days of life are fed with “marshmallow”, that is, a secretion from the goiter, similar to the milk of mammals.
