a third of people stressed about Christmas

A third of Italians are stressed about Christmas, according to a survey conducted for the Chamber of Psychologists. Among the reasons, specialists cite loneliness, a feeling of inadequacy to the collective state of pre-Christmas euphoria and financial problems.

“This time of year is stressful for one in three Italians and for various reasons, practical and psychological,” said the president of the National Council of the Chamber of Psychologists, David Lazzari, quoted by the ADNKronos agency.

As he noted, “the fact is that Christmas causes melancholy and stress.”

“The main reasons are basically three: loneliness, the difference between the external festive mood and the personal situation – the moment of the year in review” – explained the Italian psychologist.

He noted that loneliness is one of the most common states of the current era.

“We know it has an impact on health, on biology, on various aspects of life. At the same time, it’s not a feeling of physical loneliness, but of being really isolated from other people, because you can feel that no matter how many people you meet,” Lazzari pointed out.

He added: “Christmas with the vibe they create reinforces that feeling.”

Moreover, he said that the cause of the stress is also the fact that Christmas is becoming more and more consumerist, which disturbs many people, because it goes against their deep meaning.

“These people feel a disconnect between their own state of mind and what is happening outside. We know that many Italians are struggling, suffering. Seeing people around you who are happy, joyful and preparing for Christmas can create a distance from how others feel,” explained the specialist. As he assessed, it causes a feeling of difference, which is poorly tolerated.

Nor should we forget, according to Dr. David Lazzari, the impact of the economic crisis, especially on those who attach great importance to the consumption aspect at Christmas. The need to give up, but also to make purchases that will only worsen the financial situation is, he noted, a cause of stress. Often, according to the observation of the psychologist, it is also to take stock of the year.
