The greatest action in the world
The Marathon des Lettres organized by Amnesty International is the largest event of its type in the world. Every year, millions of people around the world unite to defend specific people whose rights are violated. The purpose of the letters is to defend the injured parties. The letters are addressed to decision makers who have a real impact on the fate of action heroes and heroines. Letters are also going to their loved ones to express their support.
The theme of this year’s edition of the Marathon is the right to peaceful assembly. Protests are an extremely important tool that can lead to social change. Regimes around the world often violently repress protesters and then illegally ban gatherings.
In whose defense are we writing letters this year?
The people the letters will be written for include: Aleksandra Skoczylenko, who disseminated information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Skoczylenko is currently being held in a Russian detention center in dignified conditions. She faces up to 10 years in prison. Letters will also be written on the case Chow Hang-tung, who is a young lawyer from Hong Kong. She was imprisoned for organizing a vigil in memory of the victims of the crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests. He’s also a hero Nasser Zefzagi from Morocco. He is serving a 20-year prison sentence for his peaceful participation in protests. Zefzagi was tortured, humiliated and treated inhumanely. He is currently being held in inhumane conditions and his health is deteriorating.
