In connection with numerous requests from residents and tobogganing enthusiasts regarding the restoration of the rank of the historical facility, which is the Mikuszowice toboggan run in Bielsko-Biała, the MP asked the Minister of Sports and Tourism about the chances and possibilities of recreating the track Miroslaw Suchon.
– In the 1970s, the Mikuszowice toboggan run was the venue for many national and international competitions and the pride of Podbeskidzie. It is the oldest natural toboggan run in the world. Players training on this facility (the finest and longest in Europe) have won world championship gold medals. Its current state – devastated and neglected – no longer resembles what it was during those historic sporting events. The actions of citizens and former tobogganers aimed at revitalizing the track have yielded no results in recent years. Despite the fact that this natural track has been the subject of monumental protection, its lower part has been covered with concrete as part of the so-called revitalization – reminds the deputy.
As he describes it, “The Silesian District Luge Sports Association currently has members in four clubs: UKS Smyk – Bielsko-Biała, KSS Beskidy – Bielsko-Biała, ULKS Zryw – Pszczyna, KS AZS AWF – Katowice“.
– Due to the lack of natural toboggan runs, athletes have to go abroad or train on ice rinks, where they can only improve the so-called. the first phase of sliding on flat ground. Therefore, many ambitious and promising players do not have the right conditions to train. Meanwhile, a toboggan run can be designed so that it can also be ridden without snow in milder winters. A well-built facility, moreover perfectly suited to a region such as Kozia Górka, is only the beginning of the revival of this beautiful sport on a national scale. Suchon noted.
And he does not hide that “it is hard to understand why the toboggan run in Mikuszowice has not been renovated or modified for so many years so that it can also be used in summer“.
– The costs of revitalizing or constructing such facilities represent a huge challenge for the local government. Without central support and adequate infrastructure, luge in Poland will be subject to liquidation processes. In the meantime, the interest in this sport is great, and the sporting results of the lugers prove the urgency of offering them decent conditions for training. – said the parliamentarian.
He also recalled that “Last November, the MKDNiS All Children’s Sport – From the Backyard to the Winter Olympic Games program, tobogganing classes with overlays for primary school children was organized by the Smyk Student Sports Club from Bielsko-Biała“.
– The interest was very high and motivated the children to practice this difficult sport. This should be a signal for the ministry to begin to treat the discipline of luge with the attention it deserves and to appreciate those for whom this sport is a great passion. – underlined Miroslaw Suchoń. At the same time, he addressed a number of questions to the Ministry of Sports concerning, among other things, the modernization of the Bielsko toboggan run.
We will return to the subject when the department publishes a response to the member’s intervention.
