Bruce Willis reported that he suffered from aphasia and that is the reason why he ended his acting career. The American media reports that the star is feeling worse and worse. “Bruce can’t say much and he doesn’t seem to understand much of what other people are saying,” read the US press.

1. A movie star struggles with an illness. It gets worse

Bruce Willis known m.in. productions such as “Glass Trap”, “The Fifth Element”, “Pulp Fiction” or even “Red” and “Red 2”, suffers from aphasia. It is a condition that often begins with communication problems – difficulty finding the right words or forgetting them. People with aphasia may also confuse words, use the wrong terms, or organize sentences in ways that are impossible to understand.

There are cases of creating new words that are incomprehensible to others. Speech disorders in aphasia can vary from mild to very severe (nearly impossible communication).

In the case of Bruce Willis, aphasia made it impossible to continue the work – the actor was unable to remember, understand and say the lines written in the script.

The radaronline portal quoted the statements of an anonymous informant, which show that the 67-year-old’s condition is deteriorating: “Bruce can’t say much and doesn’t seem to catch much of what other people are saying. There are days when they see glimpses of the older Bruce, but they’re brief and distant. He seems to be drifting further and further away from them and it breaks their hearts.”

The informant claims that Bruce can count on the help of his family.

“They know he won’t live forever, so they cherish every moment.” He added: “The girls can’t imagine Christmas without Bruce. It was very painful to watch him deteriorate. The older girls miss old Bruce – the one who teased them about their boyfriends and gave them advice unsolicited. Now all they can do is tell her they love her and pray for a Christmas miracle.”

2. What causes aphasia?

Aphasia occurs when the left hemisphere of the brain is damaged. Speech and comprehension disorders then appear stroke, that is, its ischemia. The cause can also be infection, atherosclerosis or the development of a neurodegenerative disease (eg. Alzheimer’s disease) or a brain tumour. The prognosis depends on the reasons – this in the actor’s case has not been made public.
