Davos World Economic Forum 2024. Big Politics and Climate

Davos 2024. There are four main themes. What?

Representatives of states and governments, including more than 40 foreign ministers, will meet in the Swiss resort in the coming days. The United States will be represented by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan. These will be the highest-ranking American representatives. Bliken and Sullivan will join key interlocutors in Davos to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip: the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Israel – underlines the Reuters agency.

The forum opens Monday with cultural events. The sessions and deliberations will begin Tuesday. They are grouped around four main themes, according to their titles“security and cooperation in a divided world”, “creating growth and jobs for a new era”, “artificial intelligence as a leading force in the economy and society” and “a long-term strategy term for climate, nature and energy”. The Davos forum will end on January 19.

Russia’s war against Ukraine was already the dominant topic at the two previous meetings in Davos. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also speak at this year’s conference. Russia, which launched its invasion of the neighboring country in February 2022, is not sending representatives to Davos. Its ally, China, will be represented at the forum by Premier Li Qiang.

Forum organizers emphasize that participants in this year’s meeting will be leaders of countries in the Global South. The Non-Aligned Group – countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America – has mostly stayed away from the Ukraine war, although it initially condemned Russia, Reuters notes.

Davos 2024. The world has many economic problems to solve

The agency emphasizes that the forum is taking place in a context of growing geopolitical tensions: war in Ukraine and conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas; the risk to navigation in the Red Sea linked to the situation in the Middle East, as well as increasing pressure from China linked to Beijing’s claims to control over Taiwan.

The economy will be an important topic of the meeting. This year’s meeting in Davos will take place at a time when businesses are operating in complex conditions: global economic growth is poor, individual economies countries grapple with high interest rates, political threats and the effects of the pandemic – notes Reuters. 530 heads of institutions from the banking, finance, investment and insurance sectors are coming to Davos.

Poland will be represented at the forum by President Andrzej Duda, who will meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on January 16. The same day, he will speak during the debate “Foreign direct investments in Central and Eastern Europe: risks and opportunities”. He will also participate in the opening of an exhibition on Russian war crimes in Ukraine. On January 17, the Polish president will participate in the debate “Defending the European United Front”.

He will hold interviews, among others: with the Vice-President of the European Commission Viera Jourova, the presidents of Croatia, Lithuania and Latvia: Andrej Plenkovic, Gitanas Nauseda and Edgars Rinkeviczs, as well as with the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres. Meetings with the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd, the Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean and the President of Singapore Tharman Shanmugaratnam are planned for January 18.
