The publication in the international magazine Forbes is proof that the Saint Dominic Fair in Gdańsk is an example of the cultural heritage of Poland and Gdańsk, but also an important example indicate on the international events map. Travel experts were particularly delighted by the atmosphere of this event, which they say is felt during the fair.

According to them, the fair on the streets of Gdańsk is supposed to take visitors into the atmosphere of the Old Town. This is particularly felt on Collectors Street, full of antiques and works of art. The entertainment, including concerts, costumed performances, parades, festivals, fireworks and numerous competitions, was also popular.

A historic event held in Gdańsk

This annual event, held in the heart of Gdańsk, attracts the attention not only of numerous tourists, but also – as you can see – recognized travel experts. Holy Fair Dominica, whose history dates back more than 764 years, is an event that takes place every summer. Combines cultural and commercial elements, lasts three weeks – they are planned for this year from July 27 to August 18.

Its beginnings date back to 1260, when Pope Alexander IV authorized the Dominicans of Gdańsk to grant 100-day indulgences on the feast day of their founder. Merchants, circus performers, acrobats and theater troupes came from all over to the Fair. Various wonders, exotic animals and even apparently…mermaids were featured.

Holy Dominic’s Fair was held annually for the following centuries, becoming an important celebration for the city of Gdańsk. This tradition was interrupted by World War II. It was revived in 1972. And that’s when the rooster becomes the symbol of the fair.

Next to the Weihnachtmarkt and the Oktoberfest, the St. Peter’s Fair. Dominica is considered one of the largest open-air cultural and business events in Europe, attracting several million visitors each year, both Polish and foreign.
