After the great successes of Łukasz Kubot and the Mariusz Frystenberg/Marcin Matkowski duo Polish Fans are waiting for another great doubles player. We are talking about Jan Zieliński, who performed very well in doubles alongside Hugo Nysa for a long time. The Pole and the Monegasque also look great at the Australian Open, where they are already in the quarter-finals.
A great success for Zieliński and Nysa. They knocked out the world’s best doubles and will play in the Australian Open quarter-finals
Zieliński and Nys in the third meeting in Melbourne faced US-British pair No. 2 Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury. In the first set, both pairs won games with confidence on their own serve, and the tie-break had to decide the fate of victory. There Ram and Salisbury were better off with five small breaks to win 7-4.
The second batch was exactly the same. Aligned Game on both sides of the net and keep their own serves translated into a second tie-break. Although at the start the rivals jumped to 4:1, the Pole and the Monegasque made up for the losses and led to result 5:5. Another point was won by Ram and Salisbury, giving them the match ball. Zieliński and Nys not only saved the match ball, but also won three points in a row, winning 8-6 and leveling the game.
The success of the second match clearly gave wings to the Polish-Monegasque couple. Zieliński and Nys in the third game of the last set beat their rivals, and after a while they came back to 3:1. The leaders added another break in the seventh game, which gave them the score 5:2. Moments later, the game was over. The Pole and the Monegasque player used the third match ball on their own serve and were able to enjoy access to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
Eliminating a classy duo like Ram and Salisbury is a great achievement. The American and Briton are the current leaders in the world doubles rankings and three-time winners tournaments grand slams. Tennis players have won the competition twice during U.S. Open (2021, 2022) and in 2020 they proved to be the best in Melbourne. They have also had great success in ATP tournaments.
Zieliński and Nys, advancing to the quarter-finals, tied last year’s US Open result. They will face French duo Benjamin Bonzi/Arthur Rinderknech for the first Grand Slam semi-final of their career.
