Slovakian ice hockey player Zdeno Chara announced his retirement on Tuesday after 24 seasons in the NHL. The 45-year-old will sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins to retire from the club where he spent 14 years.
Chara was drafted in 1996 by the New York Islanders. After four seasons in New York, he appeared with the Ottawa Senators for the next four. In 2006, he signed a five-year contract with the Boston team. Already in the first edition of the Bruins tournament, he became the captain of the team with which he won the Stanley Cup in the 2010/2011 season. During his career, he also appeared in the Washington Capitals.
“After 25 seasons of professional hockey, 1,680 NHL games, 200 Stanley Cup post-season games and hundreds of international games, I am proud to announce my decision to retire from the sport. I am honored to be able to return to TD Garden to sign a one-day contract and officially end my NHL career with the Boston Bruins, a team that means a lot to me and my family. There are a lot of people who have helped me and contributed to my success”, wrote the Slovak on Instagram.
Chara, who measures 206 cm, was the tallest player in the NHL. He has 1,680 regular games under his belt, the most defensemen in the league. He registered 209 goals and 471 assists.
He played last season for the New York Islanders. He scored 14 points (two goals and 12 assists) in 72 matches (PAP).
