Elon Musk surprised the political world by declaring his financial support for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk has pledged to give $45 million monthly to America PAC, making him one of the largest individual donors in American political history.

America PAC, a group supporting Trump, also has the backing of other prominent tech figures.Donors include brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, known for their investments in cryptocurrencies and their feud with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Other major donors include former Tesla executive Antonio Gracias and Douglas Leone, a partner at the prestigious private equity firm Sequoia Capital.
America PAC, which raised $8.75 million in June, plans to focus its efforts on so-called swing states — states where election results are uncertain and could swing the outcome in favor of one party. The group aims to encourage Republican supporters to register to vote and apply to vote by mail.

So far, the largest known donation to the current election campaign was $50 million from Tim Mellon, heir to the founders of Mellon Bank, in support of Trump.
In March, Musk, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at $252 billion, said he would not financially support any presidential candidate. That decision changed shortly after the assassination attempt on the former US president.
