A patient in a Roman hospital played the saxophone during a nine-hour operation to remove a brain tumor. 10 specialists participated. The complicated procedure was successful.
Surgery to remove a brain tumor in a 35-year-old man was performed at Paideia International Hospital in Rome. The procedure was quite unusual, because the patient, who is a musician, was conscious all the time and, in addition, during the operation … he played the saxophone.
Italian media reported that the man made, among other themes, the cult film “Love Story” and the Italian national anthem.
‘The architectural complexity of the brain and its remarkable plasticity make our brains very different from person to person. Everyone is unique, just like everyone else. The wake-up operation maps with pinpoint accuracy the neural networks that underlie various brain functions, such as playing, speaking, moving, remembering, and counting. The goal of the “wake-up” operation is to remove the brain tumor while preserving the patient’s quality of life, said Dr. Christian Brogna, the neurosurgeon who performed the operation.
– Each “sleepless operation” not only allows you to achieve the maximum result in the elimination of pathologies, but is a real discovery. Each time, it gives us insight into the functioning of this fascinating but still mysterious organ in many ways – the brain – added the neurosurgeon.
Hospital authorities announced that the nine-hour operation, which involved 10 specialists from around the world, was a success.
“The brain tumor was successfully removed without worsening the patient’s neurological function,” the Paideia International Hospital website reported.
