J. Kumoch: the theme of repairing the war damage caused by…

The topic of compensation for damage caused by the German state to Poland during World War II is not closed, it is not the perpetrator who closes the topic, but the victim, the leader said on Thursday of the Presidential Office of International Policy Jakub Kumoch.

On September 1, a report on the losses suffered by Poland as a result of German aggression and occupation during World War II was presented, which shows that the total amount of losses is more than PLN 6 billion 220 billion PLN 609 million. The report was prepared by a team operating during the previous legislature, led by a PiS MP, the current deputy head of the Foreign Ministry, Arkadiusz Mularczyk.

During a press briefing, Kumoch was asked whether the subject of war reparations would be discussed during President Andrzej Duda’s next visit to Germany, scheduled for December 12.

The minister pointed out that President Duda speaks exactly the same way as the Polish government and the majority of Poles. “The subject of any reparation, compensation, let’s call it that, for the damage caused by the German state to Poland during the Second World War is not a closed subject, because Poland did not receive any compensation for this “Kumoch said.

He stressed that “it is an elementary principle of justice that it is not the perpetrator who closes the subject, but the victim”.

When asked if the subject of compensation would be discussed during President Duda’s visit to Germany, he replied that “there are hardly any such meetings between President Duda and a German partner in which this subject would not appear”.

“Our main challenge, however, is the present and the actions in the months to come, also with regard to assistance to Ukraine, but above all, to counteract what is a possible scenario – in the face of the bombardment and the destruction by Russia of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure – that is, an additional wave of refugees,” he told Kumoch.

He was also asked about Western European views on the need for certain guarantees for Russia in the context of possible peace talks.

“Indeed, there were voices about the so-called guarantees to Russia, we believe that Russia has no right to feel threatened, on the contrary – the countries neighboring Russia have the right to feel At the same time, Poland has always emphasized that it respects the territorial integrity of Russia, it only demands that it respect the territorial integrity of other states,” Kumoch said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that the West should consider how to meet Russia’s declared need for security guarantees if Vladimir Putin agrees to negotiations to end the war with Ukraine. In an interview with CBS News, Macron said the policy of isolation is the worst, especially against a leader like Putin. (PORRIDGE)
