On October 23, 1947, Kazimierz Deyna was born. The best Polish footballer of the 20th century. If he were alive, he would be 75 years old today. His life, however, tragically ended on September 1, 1989.
Kazimierz Deyna as a young boy, he trained at Włókniarz Starogard Gdański, a club in his hometown. He definitely stood out from the other players and was called to the best junior camp. He was among the eighty best young footballers in all of Poland. Three months after the camp, he was called up for a match against Czechoslovakia. Soon, inadvertently, he became a player for two clubs at once: Arka and Włókniarz, for which he was suspended from playing for 9 months. He didn’t waste that time. He went to Łódź, where he trained for almost a year, and on October 8, 1966, he made his first league debut for Łódź KS. Later, Deyna joined Legia Warszawa, making his debut on November 20, 1966 in a match against Ruch Chorzów. Over the next few years, he did well at the Łazienkowska club, becoming one of the best players in Legia Warsaw. Double champion of Poland in 1969 and 1970. Winner of the Polish Cup in 1973. Meanwhile, with the Polish national team, he won the Olympic Championships in Munich in 1972. Two years later, at the world championships, he won a silver medal. In 1976, he was a finalist at the Montreal Olympics. Also, countless rewards, incl. for the third best footballer in the world.
In 1978 he went to England, where he played for Manchester City. Unfortunately, the English style of play did not suit him and on February 23, 1981 he signed a contract with the San Diego team. It was the beginning of the end of Warsaw star Legia’s career. He played his last professional match in May 1987. Thanks to his summer camps for children, “Kaz Deyna World Cup Soccer Camps” forgot for a moment the reality in which he increasingly abused alcohol. As if that weren’t enough, his longtime manager wiped out bank accounts by cheating “Kazik” and depriving him of his achievements. Deyna was killed on September 1, 1989. He rammed his car into a truck parked by the side of the road. Fans will always remember that.
Today he is a symbol of the Legion, revered and adored by his fans, a member of the club’s hall of fame, and his monument stands beside the stadium. In 2020, his a magnificent fresco in Ochota.
