The funeral ceremony of Tomasz Wójtowicz took place on Saturday in Lublin. The exceptional volleyball player, world champion and Olympic champion said goodbye to his family and friends. The Mass, celebrated in the Archcathedral of Lublin, was also attended by, among others, the Voivode of Lublin Lech Sprawka, the Marshal of the Lublin Voivodeship Jarosław Stawiarski, the Mayor of Lublin Krzysztof Żuk, as well as representatives of the world Sport: Vice-President of the Polish Olympic Committee Mieczysław Nowicki and President of the Polish Volleyball Federation Sebastian Świderski. The ceremony had a state character.
After the service, the funeral procession walked through the streets: Królewska, Krakowskie Przedmieście and ul. Lipowa, Katyn victims and advocates for peace. Tomasz Wójtowicz was buried in the Lipowa Street Cemetery in Aleja Zasłużonych.
Tomasz Wójtowicz was born on September 22, 1953 in Lublin. He started his sports career with the clubs of Lublin: MKS and AZS, then he played for Avia Świdnik. He was one of the most famous and outstanding Polish volleyball players. With the Polish national team, led by coach Hubert Wagner, he won the world championship in Mexico in 1974 and the Olympic gold medal in Montreal in 1976. He was also an ambassador for the province of Lublin, a citizen of honor of Lublin and Świdnik. The Globus room bears his name. He died on October 24, following a long cancerous illness. He was 69 years old.
