Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in the village of Privolnoye in Stavropol Krai.

After the death of Konstantin Czernienka in 1985, he was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU. Gorbachev took power during the economic crisis in the Soviet Union and the deterioration of relations between the USSR and the West.

In 1986, he launched a policy of perestroika (reconstruction) that included modernizing the economy, increasing civil liberties, reducing corruption, and warming relations with the West. As part of perestroika, Gorbachev introduced glasnost (openness), under which censorship was abolished and the provision on the leading role of the CPSU was removed from the constitution. Głasnost, or openness, initiated the process of formation of national civil societies in the Soviet Union.

In May 1989, he was elected President of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to restore good relations with the West. To this end, he renounces the arms race and withdraws the troops from Afghanistan.

In 1990 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee awarded him for his successful efforts to end the Cold War.

After the annexation of Crimea, the Ukrainian security service banned Gorbachev from entering Ukraine. The services justified this decision on security grounds, pointing out that Gorbachev, among others, publicly supported the Russian annexation of Crimea.

As the Ria Novosti agency reports, Michał Gorbaczow died on Tuesday after a difficult and long death sickness. The former leader of the USSR in early July was hospitalized at the Central Teaching Hospital in Moscow.
