China welcomes news of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s announced visit to our country, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a press briefing on Tuesday. According to Reuters, Blinken is expected to be in China on February 5-6.
“China welcomes the visit of Secretary of State Blinken. China and the United States are making specific arrangements on this,” Wang Wenbin said, commenting on US media reports that Blinken will visit China on February 5-6.
“We also hope that the United States will take the right approach to China and maintain dialogue instead of confrontation,” Wang added.
Blinken is due to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Beijing on February 6, according to Reuters, citing unnamed US administration sources. Politico previously announced that Blinken’s visit to China would take place on February 5-6.
It would be the first visit by a US secretary of state since October 2018, when Mike Pompeo met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
According to Reuters, Blinken’s visit to China is the result of a November meeting between US and Chinese Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping at the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali. The two leaders then committed to more frequent talks on Taiwan, human rights, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and economic issues.
The two leaders also agreed at the time that Blinken would visit China, the White House said, but no specific date was given.
Last month, a delegation of US officials met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng in Langfang, a city adjacent to Beijing, to discuss the US Secretary of State’s visit to China, Reuters reported, citing the US State Department. (PORRIDGE)
