August 9 – what unusual holidays?
On August 9 we can celebrate National Book Lovers Day. That day, we put down our smartphones, pull out a good book and just read (an audiobook can be too). If we don’t have one on hand, we visit a bookstore or library, then immerse ourselves in reading and relax with a book.
Except that:
- On August 9, South Africa celebrates National Women’s Day, and in Singapore, Independence Day is celebrated on the anniversary of Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in 1965.
- We can celebrate on August 9 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This is an opportunity to highlight the diversity of indigenous cultures and to draw attention to the current situation of indigenous peoples in the world, to realize how much still needs to be done to improve their living conditions. An estimated 370 to 500 million indigenous people live in 90 countries. These communities have their own languages, traditions, cultures and systems of governance.
- On August 9 we can also celebrate melon day. It was established almost 30 years ago in Turkmenistan, a country located in Central Asia on the coast of the Caspian Sea. However, melon is such a tasty and healthy fruit that this day has also been celebrated in other parts of the world. Today we celebrate all varieties of sweet and juicy melon – cantaloupe, galia, musk or honey.
