  • December 22 also falls math day. It was established in India to honor birthday the famous Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He was a self-taught genius who had no background in mathematics, but his knowledge amazed the world. Its modular functions, in particular the so-called Ramanujan Function, are used e.g. in superstring theory. He discovered among other taxi numbers, that is to say an infinite sequence of the smallest natural numbers which can be written in n different ways as the sum of two cubes. Srinivasa Ramanujan was in very poor health and died at the age of only 33. In 1976, his box containing a 130-page collection of maps, later called “The Lost Notebook”, was found. It contained about 4,000 Ramanujan formulas. Some of its numerical dependencies, which most often give rise to new theories, could not be proven so far.
