In the next iPhone software update, iOS 16, they will appear options to edit and cancel sent messages in iMessage. There will also be an option to mark discussions as unread so you can come back to them later, Apple announced at its annual developer conference on Monday.
These options will be available for 30 days after the text is sent, Apple added.
iPhone overtakes Twitter
MacRumors first reported in March 2020 that Apple was currently working on a way to allow users to delete iMessages. The report says both the sender and recipient of the text would be notified if the message was taken down.
Editing and deleting messages has long been available on other messaging services, including WhatsApp.
Google has long had a setting that allows users to cancel emails for a few seconds after sending them. In turn, Slack users can edit and delete messages sent in this app, but only for a limited time.
Twitter users have long been asking for an edit button, and the feature has become something of a joke over the years. In April, the company posted on April Fool’s Day: “We are working on an edit button.” But later, she added that the feature will likely debut on the paid subscription service in a few months.
Apple has not announced when the new iOS update will be released.
