Norway throws a hammer. Eivind Henriksen received money to prepare

The Norwegian rival of Paweł Fajdek and Wojciech Nowicki, the Tokyo Olympic silver medalist in the hammer throw Eivind Henriksen, who has so far financed his career himself, received 40,000 euros to prepare for the world championships in next year in August in Budapest.

The Norwegian athletics association, Olympiatoppen, awarded €1 million in October to athletes and their coaches the following season.

The financial program covered 27 athletes, among whom 650,000 euros were allocated. Their trainers received 350,000, and members of the auxiliary apparatus, such as physiotherapists, 170,000 euros.

This is untaxed money included in the scholarship system. Olympic gold medalists Karsten Warholm 400 meters hurdles, Jakob Ingebrigsten 1500 meters and silver hammer Henriksen were the most awarded. For him, this is the first financial support of his career.

Norwegian Olympic medalists do not receive any financial bonus from their Olympic committee or sports confederation, only mascots and cakes. Only federations can grant financial support in the form of scholarships.

“Warholm and Ingebrigtsen are big financial stars and have wealthy sponsors paying solid medal bonuses, so this money is nothing out of the ordinary for them. Henriksen, however, came out of nowhere, his competitors are not not particularly sponsored, and he works outside of training. that this money is a financial injection that is his salvation “- commented the daily” Verdens Gang “.

Henriksen works daily in the port of Oslo to charge imported cars. From now on, after having received financial support, she intends to limit her work to half or even a quarter of the time.

His full after-tax salary is significantly less than the scholarship he received, but he has no intention of quitting.

– It is not only his performance, but also the contact with colleagues, and now, after these medals, I am supported by everyone, even the management. It’s very motivating and I just couldn’t train. I must be in contact with the world, said the hammer.

Henriksen won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Eugene and the bronze medal at the European Championships in Munich. In both cases, he suffered from atrial fibrillation, which he has suffered from since he was 13 years old. He had an ablation in September and is now training normally.

He admitted his goal now was the World Cup gold medal.

– This is how every athlete approaches the start, but if he fails, losing to such giants as Fajdek or Nowicki will not be a disgrace or failure – he added.
