Paweł Mykietyn has received the European Film Prize for the music of “IO” directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, the European Film Academy has announced. The awards gala will take place on December 10 in Reykjavik.

The list of winners of the European Film Awards in eight categories – including best editing, cinematography, make-up and production design – has been published on the European Film Academy website. It included Paweł Mykietyn, appreciated for his music on Jerzy Skolimowski’s IO. The picture may yet earn Skolimowski the Best Director award. Besides the Polish artist, Ruben Ostlund (“In the triangle”), Lukas Dhont (“Close”), Marie Kreutzer (“In corset”), Ali Abbasi (“Holy Spider”) and Alice Diop (“Saint Omer”) compete for this statuette. “). The world premiere of Jerzy Skolimowski’s “IO” took place in May this year. in main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The painting was awarded the jury prize. At the end of August, it became the Polish candidate for the Oscar in the category of best international feature film.

“IO” refers to the movie “Bless You, Balthazar!” Robert Bresson, one of the classics of French cinema. The main character is a donkey (played by Taco, Holla, Marietta, Hettore, Rocco and Maya), who performs in the circus with a young performer named Kasandra (Sandra Drzymalska). The girl takes good care of him and IO gives him unconditional love. Unfortunately, when ushers enter the circus after a protest against animal use, the two have to go their separate ways. The donkey goes to the stable, then changes ownership several times. One evening, he receives an unexpected visit from Kassandra, who – remembering her birthday – brings IO a carrot cake.

After a while, however, she leaves, pushed by Ziom (Tomasz Organek). She misses the animal and decides to find her. He runs away from the farm, gets lost in the forest, and then is picked up by a group of thugs for a while. As the journey continues, the donkey finds itself in the care of a truck driver (Mateusz Kościukiewicz) and an Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo), who take it to the estate of the Countess (Isabelle Huppert).

The film’s co-writer and co-producer is Ewa Piaskowska. Michał Dymek is responsible for cinematography (some of them were directed by Michał Englert and Paweł Edelman), and Agnieszka Glińska is responsible for editing. The film’s distributor in Poland was Gutek Film.

Paweł Mykietyn (born May 20, 1971) is a composer and clarinetist. He collaborated with with Jacek Kaspszyk and Jerzy Maksymiuk, he composed for Ewa Pobłocka, as well as commissioned by many festivals and institutions, including “Autumn of Warsaw”, Polish Radio, Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, as well as performers , including Elżbieta Chojnacka and Jerzy Artysz.

In the years 1997-2001 he was the musical director of the Teatr Studio in Warsaw, and since 2008 he has held this position at the Nowy Teatr. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including at the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia for the music of “33 Scenes from Life” by Małgorzata Szumowska and “Essential Killing” and “11 Minutes” by Jerzy Skolimowski. In 2008, for his “2nd Symphony”, he received the “Opus” prize from the public media in the field of classical music.

He is decorated, among other things, with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Silver Medal “Gloria Artis for the merit of culture”.
