With the national team, he scored 77 goals in 92 games between 1957 and 1971. For a long time he was the independent record holder for the number of goals for the Brazilian national team. It was only at the recent World Cup in Qatar that the score was evened with 77 goals Neymar.

Pele became one of the first global sporting icons of the 20th century. With his winning smile and incredible humility that charmed the masses of fans, he was better known than many Hollywood stars or politicians – many, if not most, of whom he had met during his six-decade career.

His fame was often overwhelming. Fans looking for memorabilia often rushed onto the pitch after games and ripped off shorts, socks and even underwear. His home in Brazil was less than a mile from the beach, but he hadn’t been there for about two decades for fear of the crowds.

Even among friends, however, he rarely complained. He believed his talent was a divine gift and spoke touchingly about how Soccer this allowed him to travel the world, comfort cancer patients and survivors of war and famine, and support his family.

God gave me this skill for one reason: to make people happy. No matter what I did, I tried not to forget it he said in an interview with Reuters in 2013.
