Ranking of the best universities in the world – Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) – also known as Shanghai List, first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It has been prepared by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy since 2009.
The American University Harvard is traditionally declared the best university in the world. Stanford came in second on the list. Third place went to the American Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The exact place in the ranking is only known for the top 100 universities in the world. The others are only mentioned approximately: universities appear in groups of 50 or 100 establishments. It is there, much lower, that we must look in the ranking of Polish universities. Last year, 11 Polish universities were on the list, of which 9. Unlike in 2022, Warsaw University of Life Sciences and Wrocław University of Science and Technology were not on the list.
Krakow and Warsaw among the best
The best universities in Poland according to the Shanghai list are the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Warsaw (which rank in the fifth hundred – ranked between 401 and 500).
Next on the list are the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and the Medical University of Krakow. Piast Śląskich in Wrocław (in the 9th century).
The last ten hundred included the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, Gdańsk University of Technology, Medical University of Warsaw, University of Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń and Warsaw University of Technology.
The ARWU ranking is based on six objective indicators. Are taken into account: the number of graduates and employees having received the Nobel Prize and the Fields Medal, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in the journals “Nature” and “Science” and the publications included in certain citation indices (Science Citation Index – Expanded index of citations in the social sciences). More than 2.5 thousand are evaluated each year. universities, and the first thousand are published.
