The reconstruction of War Cemetery No. 445 from the First World War in Chrzanów (Małopolskie), where soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army are buried, has been completed. The opening ceremony of the necropolis after renovation is scheduled for November 8 this year.
The mayor of Chrzanów, Robert Maciaszek, announced on Tuesday that thanks to the work carried out, the place has been restored with due respect. On the graves of soldiers, there are plaques with the names and surnames of those buried there.
In line with the renovation, the cemetery has retained its historic appearance and the work has been carried out under the supervision of the conservator of monuments. The fence was rebuilt, the graves were rebuilt, on which steel crosses with plaques with the names of the buried people were placed. On the side of the slope falling towards the backwaters created a few years ago, an 8-meter wooden cross was erected.
The first works on the necropolis began in 2020. Then, at the request of the mayor, the adjacent embankment was secured. This year, the Małopolska Voivode awarded a grant of almost PLN 350,000. PLN for the reconstruction of the war cemetery.
War Cemetery No. 445 was created in 1914, it is located behind the Jewish cemetery. There are buried soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army who died during the First World War or died from typhoid fever and cholera. They are people of different nationalities: Poles, Ruthenians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Austrians, Bosnians, Croats, Russians, Italians. In total, as determined by the Chrzanów Museum, 171 soldiers are buried there. Most of them were identified by their first and last names.
